Understanding Muscle Spasms and What Causes Them

Understanding Muscle Spasms and What Causes Them

A mild twitch or severe pain commonly experienced in the thighs, calves, foot arches, hands, arms, abdomen, and sometimes along the ribcage may just be a Muscle spasm. These occur when a muscle involuntarily and forcibly contracts and cannot relax.

As a provider of Physical Therapy Services in West Palm Beach, Florida, we have treated several clients with muscle spasms. These are usually caused by:

  • Insufficient stretching before physical activity
  • Muscle fatigue
  • Exercising in heated temperatures
  • Dehydration
  • Electrolyte imbalances in protein, magnesium, and calcium

These can occur at any time to anyone whether young, old, sedentary, or active. However, infants, the elderly, people who overexert during exercise, those who are ill, and endurance athletes are more likely to get them.

Doing regular flexibility exercises before and after workouts and staying hydrated can help prevent future muscle spasms.

If you’re experiencing severe or frequent muscle spasms, make an appointment with your doctor regarding treatment and possible relation to underlying factors.
