Controlling Cancer Pain: Relief for the Pain

Controlling Cancer Pain: Relief for the Pain

Cancer pain does not happen in every cancer patient. But when they do, it can be difficult for the patient. The Flagler Institute understands there is more to pain than just the discomfort. Pain often brings anxiety and stress that affects a person’s quality of life. Fortunately, there are different treatment options available such as those that can be carried out at home or in a comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation facility.

Most cancer pain can be managed. Controlling pain is an important part of the patient’s health program. With reliable physical therapy services in West Palm Beach, Florida, pain management is covered.

Removal of the pain source through surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy is a good option. However, not all cases permit this to happen. When it is not possible, the following pain relief medications may help:

  • Over-the-counter (OTC) prescription pain relievers – aspirin, acetaminophen (such as Tylenol), and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others)
  • Weak opioid medications – derived from opium (such as codeine)
  • Strong opioid medications – oxycodone (Oxycontin, Roxicodone, others), morphine (Kadian, Ms Contin, others), hydromorphone (Dilaudid, Exalgo), methadone (Dolophine, Methadose), fentanyl (Actiq, Fentora, others), or oxymorphone (Opana)

Talk with your doctor first about the best pain relief for your condition.
